Our first trimester mission focus is Adopt-a-Family, and to raise more funds we are pre-selling donuts, for $1 each. The last day to order is next Monday, and the donuts will be delivered on Thursday the 19th. Another way we support the Adopt-a-Family program is by collecting teddy bears and other stuffed animals, to be brought to school on Teddy Bear Day in December. We also encourage families to send in uneaten Halloween candy (in plain wrappers), and this year we would like to add one item to our collection: boxes of cereal. You may send in your donations of boxed cereal at any time in the coming weeks, and we will send it down to LA with Monsignor Terry when he comes to collect our teddy bears. Thank you for your generosity!

What we are working on this week:

Religion: We begin chapter 9, which discusses how we can honor Mary and follow her example. We will have a test on Unit 2 (chapters 5-9) next Tuesday . I will send home a study sheet with the students later this week.

Math: Students should complete ixL Math skills D8, D12 and E2 by next Monday. We begin Unit 4 in Everyday Math, which focuses upon decimals.

Spelling: This week and next we will be working on Unit 13 (since next week is a short week). The book pages should be done by next Tuesday, and the test will be next Tuesday as well.

Grammar: We will have a test on Unit 2, Nouns, on Thursday.

Writer’s Workshop: We are editing and writing final drafts of our realistic fiction stories. We should be done with these by Friday. Our next writing project will be informational writing. We will be writing mission reports! Now would be a good time to discuss which mission your child would like to learn about. This will be our focus for the school fair in early March. Look for my email about the mission project, which I will send to you before the Thanksgiving break.

Vocabulary: This week we begin our study of Unit 7 words; we will not have a test on these words until after Thanksgiving.

Reading: Everyone continues to read book selections at their reading level. We are learning a variety of strategies, which will help us to become better readers. Fluency homework #12 should be completed by next Monday.  Reading Logs will be due next Monday as well. You can access the form here.reading log fiction nonfiction

Social Studies: We continue our work in groups, preparing reports and posters on the Native Americans who lived in the four different regions of CA.

Science: We will have a test on Chapter 2 this Friday. Students have 14 Vocabulary cards to study from, which will help them to review the main concepts in this chapter, so I will not be sending home a study sheet for this test. They may take home a science book to prepare for the test if they would like to.  The posters of vocabulary words will be due on Friday as well.

Thanking you for your continuing support,

Mrs. Mary Dwyer
