The 7th grade just finished reading Dragonwings by Laurence Yep. It is the story of young Chinese boy who sailed from China to join his Father in America. The two had never meet. The class learned a great deal about the discrimination the Chinese people endured in the early 1900’s. On the lighter side, the father was a great kite maker, who dreamed of flying a airplane. This historical fiction was set in San Francisco, so the main characters had to deal with the Earthquake of 1904 and many other challenges.
Today, students brought in various types of Chinese food to share with their classmates. Everything was delicious! After lunch, the class enjoyed flying kites on the field.
