Dear Parents, August 29, 2011
We had a wonderful first full week back to school! The children are learning the routine of first grade and are doing a wonderful job. I am very proud of them! I would also like to remind you that Back-to-School Night is Wednesday and I look forward to you visiting our classroom!
In language arts this week, we will finish our review of the alphabet and the sounds associated with each letter. Our phonics focus is the short sounds of the vowels. We are also practicing “touch-bump-touch” writing in our spelling journals so that we are ready to start our spelling homework in our journals next week. Don’t worry…you will receive an explanation in your Back-to-School Night packet! In math, we will continue working with addition and have started on how to tell time. The children were just so excited about going to music and P.E. that they continued asking me all day if it was 2:00 so…we learned how to tell that it was 2:00! So why stop there? There is a unit on time in our math book and I’ve decided to pull it out and use it in between our study of number sense. Do not be alarmed when you see “out of order” pages from our math books – it’s just that your children were ready and willing learners! Social studies, finds us learning about rules and the responsibilities we have to follow them. In science we will start our unit on life by studying plants and in religion we will be spend time talking about the goodness of God and how we find that goodness in all that He has created.
Your children have been doing an excellent job in getting their planners signed! Please remember to check your child’s homework too. By signing the planner you are not only acknowledging that you know what the homework is but also that you also have checked it.
Remember to join us for Back-to-School Night Wednesday. Friday is a noon-dismissal day as the teachers have a staff meeting.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Have a wonderful week!
Mrs. Manning
