Dear Parents, May 25, 2015
I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend! A nice taste of what is coming… Summer!! 🙂
This week in first grade, we are learning…
Language Arts: We are wrapping up Theme 10 with week 3! Our reading strategy this week is monitor/clarify. Part of becoming a good reader is realizing that if the story we are reading is unclear we must stop and clarify the story so that we understand. As you read with your student please practice this strategy. The comprehension skill that will help us with this is cause and effect. Remember the cause is why something happened and the effect is what happened. Our phonics focus this week is on adding –er and –est to base words. Examples include hot, hotter, hottest, cold, colder, and coldest. Our grammar focus is on comparing.
Math: We will be continuing Unit 10, which is all about reviewing what we have learned throughout our year together. This week, we will be reviewing base-10 blocks and number grid puzzles.
Religion: We will be finishing our Family Life Series this week. Our topic will be: Family Peace.
Science: In science are taking our final test! It is all about matter and the changes that can occur.
Social Studies: We are just about to wrap up our Unit 5: My Country, My Heroes. We will be discussing monuments and diagrams this week. We will be taking our test next week.
