Week of November 14th

Hello First Grade Families!

A busy next few weeks are upon us!

Housekeeping items!

1. We are soaking up the warm sun when it peeks out! Please have your child wear their Sacred Heart jackets and beanies to keep them warm! Mark their name in them too!

2. Please bring a snack for your students even if they have a hot lunch. They get hungry by break time at 10:15.

3. Kindles need to be in their backpacks and charged. The students feel at a loss if theirs isn’t ready to use. Headphones too!

4. Any folder or red envelope needs to be returned to school. The office uses the red envelope to send information home. I use their completed work folder to fill every 2 weeks and their homework folder once a week on Tuesday. Thank you!

This week:

Religion: We show our love for God by being thankful.
Math: Continuing with learning to take a part addition problems. We call it decomposing. We use a diagram called: Parts and Total. I will print one out and place it in your child’s “Go Home Folder” for them to have on hand. Expo markers will be needed. This is a wonderful way to use items at home to practice addition! Legos, buttons, dried beans. Anything to help them manipulate items and see the parts to the total. For practicing money, grab some coins: pennies, nickels, and dimes. Write a total and see them place the money on each part of the mat to make the total. Now let’s see them make different addition problems for the same total. How many ways can you make 5 or 10?
Science: Monitoring Pumpkin Jack’s decomposing (Did you notice we are learning how to use this vocabulary word in 2 subject areas!) And how animals’ homes help in their survival.  Reading: Seasonal passages and reading group work. A focus on 5 sense words to develop visualizing.

Special activities:

Thursday morning: We will go through learning centers with our 6th grade buddies. We will be learning more about saints.

Friday: 1/2 day and Primary Centers. If you wish to volunteer please drop me an email reply! I appreciate all who have helped out.

Next Tuesday (22nd): “Friendsgiving” we will be concluding our Review of Stone Soup tales by making Stone Soup!

Next Wednesday (23rd): No school! Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you to all who have been able to attend conferences thus far. I have enjoyed meeting with you and sharing your child’s progress! Please look for the “Friendsgiving” section in our homework this week. We will be reading a variety of Stone Soup stories in class. We will be making Stone Soup together next Tuesday (11/22) morning!
     Have a great week!
