Hello Families–
First, let me say how thrilled the students were on Friday that so many family members could attend our Oktoberfest! Thank you to all who came! It was a wonderful afternoon! This week in class, we finished up our unit on apples. They loved our cooking applesauce and the taste testing we did on our different varieties. The applesauce recipe and photos of our tasting time are above. During our taste testing, we did some math and graphed our favorite variety. We will finish October with a unit on bats and pumpkins in science.
In reading, we will begin our unit on recognizing a story’s problem and solution. This will also help add to our reading strategies when we figure out why an author has written the story. Is it for the reader to gain information like a lesson to learn or to entertain? We also continue to practice sounding out each sound we hear as we break up a word into parts. I have found that we sometimes do not hear middle sounds. So we tap sounds out, write the sounds out, and double-check the word again. These strategies help when we are spelling words for our sentences too.
In math, we are learning about nickels and pennies. We are counting on the total of nickels we have counted by five, making the challenging switch to writing that total down, and then switching to counting the pennies in the group by one more. This coin activity helps cement the number sense of holding a total and counting higher.
In writing, we are learning how proper nouns (names of things with capitals) and regular nouns (person, place, thing, and animals) help create stronger sentences. We are also learning to write more descriptive sentences.
This week, we have Primary Centers on Friday. Thank you to those who have volunteered! Please sign in at the office at 10:00. Centers will end at 11:40. There is a noon dismissal that day, too.
Thank you!–Mrs. Driscoll
