First Grade Families-

This is our last week of February! Please come join us at Mass on Ash Wednesday. We will be attending mass at 8:30 a.m.

Today your child will come home with their prayer and word work journal. Here are some ideas of what to do with them besides recycling them since they have extra pages. 🙂 I would recommend you place their prayer journal next to their bed and have them write a prayer before going to bed. The word work journal can be used weekly to add and practice their weekly words.

HOMEWORK

Fluency

Math Worksheets: Math IXL will be O.4, E.4, D.8

Reading Log: Reading Log is 20 minutes a day. Book reports looked great this morning.

Reminder: You may count the minutes used to write their book report on their reading log.

Sight Words: Students continue this week to be tested. It is taking a little longer than usual since so many students are showing LOTS of progress. New books will not be sent home until the end of the testing period.

Spelling Test: Spelling Test will be on Friday. Some students will have assessments to check for mastery of word patterns. By the end of next week, some students may move to a sort they had previously due to review or needs to skip a few sorts due to mastery of word patterns. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

Language Arts

Grammar/Writing: We are learning to title our information writing so we can officially begin our table of contents.

Reading/Phonics: In phonics, we will are learning to listen to a word and ALLLLLL the word parts. If you write nver (for never), you must say the word and listen to the syllables. The word never would have two syllables so you must be able to notice that nver is missing a vowel. This is such a game-changer for so many of my students.

In reading, we continue reviewing how nonfiction books have a table of contents, diagrams, labels, vocabulary/glossary and much more. We are learning to stop and study each page and guessing what might come next.

This week we learn to write what we have learned after we have read a book. Last week, we read a few articles from our National Geographic and worked in groups to present to our second-grade friends. It was such a great way to practice our presentation skills.

Math: We finished our mid-year assessment last week. We continue with our math timed testing to help them become fluent with their math facts. We are learning about fact families, number collection boxes, and reading tally charts.

Social Studies: Students are learning the name of our country, state, and city. We added some art to Social Studies this week. We are making our American flag. You can stop by to check them out on our board by the end of this week.

Religion: This week we begin LENT. We will have discussions about LENT this week and next week. We also begin a conversation on the hierarchy in our church (Pope, Archibishop, Bishop, Priests).
