Dear Parents, February 23, 2015
This week in first grade, we are learning…
Language Arts: Our reading strategy this week is predict/infer and the comprehension skill that will help with that strategy is predicting. Taking time to look through what we are going to read, to look at titles or pictures and predict what the story will be about can help us understand the story better. Stop while reading, predict what a character might do or what events might take place – see if you can infer what will happen next or what is most likely to happen. Our phonics focus is the long /a/ sound spelled with the vowel pairs ai or ay, as in sail or day. Our grammar focus is on naming words for one or more than one.
Spelling: Our spelling words are from unit 27 and focus on the ay/ai vowel pair.
Math: We will be beginning our next unit in math – Geometry and Attributes. We will be practicing what attributes are and how to identify them and identifying shapes.
Religion: We will be reading from our textbooks this week. We will be discussing how “Jesus Teaches Us to Love Others”.
Science: In science we will be working from our chapter on weather. This week we will be discussing how weather changes the land, which will lead us into our chapter test.
Social Studies: In social studies we will be continuing our work on our School Fair project!
