Fourth grade’s first English Language Arts unit ends with the students writing an informative essay answering the unit’s essential question, “How do stories reveal what we have in common?”

Next week, Unit 2 will be introduced in fourth grade.  This unit invites students to explore geography as it relates to seasons and weather.  Students will discover how an author’s use of setting can affect the plot of a story.

Unit 2 begins with the reading of Patricia Lauber’s Hurricanes:  Earth’s Mightiest Storms. A variety of both literary texts and informational texts will be read to emphasize how weather plays an important part in our lives.  An informational text, graphic organizer will be filled in by the class as they explore such topics as types of weather and how they are caused.

Students will also read a nonfiction book where weather determines the plot of the story.  Finally, an essay will be written discussing the positive and negative effects of weather on real life and in literature.

I am having a wonderful time working with Mr. Doswell and our TA’s as we introduce the students to more great books!
