The eighth graders recently completed readings of “The Diary of Anne Frank” by Francis Goodrich and Albert Hackett, as well as Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Both Anne Frank and Annemarie, a character from Number the Stars, show bravery in facing the challenges of war and persecution. Their unique stories offer valuable insights into the different experiences and reactions during this period in history.
Today, the eighth graders had the opportunity to visit the Holocaust Museum LA. They explored exhibits showcasing artifacts, photographs, and personal accounts. Some students had the chance to hear firsthand experiences from Holocaust survivor Mary Bauer, who spent time at Auschwitz-Birkenau shortly after Germany invaded Hungary. Additionally, many students were deeply touched by the Goldrich Family Foundation Children’s Memorial, which features walls with 1.2 million holes symbolizing the children who perished during the Holocaust. Students added their personal messages to expand the heart shape on one of the walls. This experience significantly enhanced the students’ empathy and comprehension of the Holocaust and the events portrayed in “The Diary of Anne Frank” and Number the Stars.
