Several changes are in place for recognizing students who achieve high academic scores in core subjects this school year.  One can be seen in the current edition of The Sacred Heart School Handbook and another follows ongoing faculty conversation this trimester.
The Handbook states:  Each trimester students in the middle school (grades 6-8) will be recognized for academic excellence and will be awarded the Sacred Heart School Academic Excellence Award. An average of 93% or higher in the core subjects (Religion, Language, Literature, Vocabulary, Social Studies, Math and Science) will be required.
The change to The Handbook statement includes a second tier of recognition for middle school students who score an average of 85%-92% in the core subjects.  To receive First or Second Honors, a student must maintain a grade of B or above in Effort & Behavior and score above 85% in all the core subjects.
In previous school years students in grades 3, 4 & 5 were placed on the Honor Roll too, but these grades are a continuation of formative educational years making an honor roll unnecessary.  Finally, the trip to Skating Plus for honor students is eliminated; with our field trip focus on academics, a trip to a skating rink no longer meets that focus.  In its place, we add an Honors Reception for qualifying students to be recognized at the close of each trimester.  Held in the early evening, a dessert bar will follow the presentation of honors certificates to each recipient.  Invitations to the first Honors Reception on December 7th will be sent following the Thanksgiving holiday and we are hopeful many family members will be able to attend to see their student(s) honored.
