Dear Third Grade Families,
Please remember to turn in your field trip permission slips for our schoolwide visit to the Ojai Storytelling Festival on Friday, May 3rd. Each student was given a permission slip to take home last week. In more field trip related news, we have scheduled two more field trips! We will be visiting:
1) The Museum of Ventura County to study the Chumash people on Thurs. 5/16.
2) The Santa Barbara Natural History Museum’s planetarium (as well as participate in a docent guided “outdoor exploration”) on Wednesday 5/8.
These field trip permission slips will be coming home both this Tuesday and next. Keep your eye out because, as you know, students cannot accompany the class without written permission prior to the trip.
Math: We will continue with measurement focusing on customary units. We will begin with mass (pounds, ounces) and then move into capacity (cups, pints, quarts & gallons). Lastly, we hope to get to customary units of length this week (inches, feet, yards, miles). This is can all be found in Chapter 4. Likewise, we will continue to work on elapsed time.
Language Arts:
Spelling & Vocabulary— Spelling: Unit 26 – dropping the “y” and adding an “ied” or “ies” to base words. Vocabulary – words about being sick.
Reading— This week we will begin a short unit on poetry. We will be reading selections from Jack Prelutzky’s Something Big Has Been Here. Please make sure your child has a copy of the text. We will begin by learning some basic vocabulary of poetry including but not limited to: stanzas, lines, and some rhyme schemes. Likewise, mark your calendars for Thursday, April 18th. On this day we will have our in class recitations for the poetry contest. Finalists will be announced Fridays morning. Every child must participate as it is class assignment.
Language—The class will be studying introductory commas. We will practice using them in sentences after words like first, next, finally, yes, no and well.
Religion: This week we will continue Chapter 16: “Jesus is Risen.”
Science: We will continue with Chapter 5, moving on to Lesson 4: Stars!
Social Studies: This week we will begin our study of the Chuman people, the American Indians of our local region!
Have a great week!
All the Best,
Mrs. Espinosa
