Happy New Year!
What a pleasure it was to see so many happy, rested second grade faces bright and early yesterday morning. I hope that everyone had a chance to play, sleep and maybe even enjoy to book or two over the long break.
Math: In class this week we’ll pick up where we left off on Unit 4: Addition and Subtraction, first by reviewing addition with regrouping before going into using estimation to check if your answer is “in the ballpark.” Next week, we’ll introduce the partial-sums algorithm (if you want a head start, click for the video link).
For IXL homework this week, please complete the following skills:
G.7 Addition with sums up to 200
N.1 Estimate to the nearest 10
N.5 Estimate sums. (Note: In class, this has been introduced as finding “ballpark estimates”. Students should be able to round each addend to the nearest ten before adding those to find a sum.)
Reading: The new year makes a great time to start a new unit, and so we begin Unit 3: Reading with Fluency. Second grade is the year that many students learn to read “in their heads” (silently), so this week will be dedicated to doing that while maintaining voice and accountability so comprehension is not compromised in the pursuit of efficiency.
Word Work: We will have new words this week and lots of Spell Checks (cumulative reviews). Plan for a test on Friday.
Science: This week we will do the first half of the lab, “Why do trees grow so tall?”
Religion: This week we will learn all about the Epiphany, including how this special day is celebrated around the world!
Have a great week!
