Hello Second Grade Families,
I hope everyone enjoyed President’s Day weekend! Although this is a short week, it is a particularly busy one. In addition to the School Fair, we begin several new units and get some dates on upcoming field trips.
Math: This week we begin Unit 6: Whole Number Operations and Number Stories. We will start the week learning a few strategies for addition with 3 addends before moving on to comparison number stories. We will also begin to lay the groundwork for subtraction with regroups through lots of modeling with base-10 blocks.
For IXL homework this week, please complete the following skills:
H.1 Subtract multiples of ten
H.5 Subtract two 2-digit numbers (without regrouping)
L.3 Addition and Subtraction word problems up to 20
Reading: We are moving on to our next Phonics Workshop Unit ~ Tackling Multisyllabic Words! This week we’ll look to some specific animals for inspiration when unpacking longer words part by part.
Word Work: Due to Valentine’s Day, we took last week’s spelling test this week. Our next spelling test will be the following Monday, too.
Writing: Although we are moving on from narrative to non-fiction informational writing, this week we’ll learn just how many of our previously taught skills can be transferred from one genre to the next. (Hint: it’s a lot!)
Science: We’ll catch up on the heart lesson we missed last week. It’s always Valentine’s Day here!
Religion: The class will learn all about the different participants in the mass as we begin to prepare for First Communion. We will also discuss Sacraments, too.
Have a great week!
Ms. Espinosa
