ACADEMICS

Reading: As we tackle tricky words in our reading, we may need to use more than one strategy (checking the picture, using what’s happening in the story, looking at a word part by part, and looking for words inside a word) to help us decode the words. We also need to pay attention to the vowels, particularly vowel teams, in the middle of those tricky words.

Phonics: We continue to review phonological awareness by listening to all the sounds in words in order to read and write words. We are making new words by adding, deleting and manipulating the phonemes. We were able to make new words by using snap words such as run, read, and big.

Spelling: We begin our differentiated sorts this week, and your child’s sort can be found in their Homework Folder. Spelling tests for this week’s sorts will be on Monday, October 11.

Math: In Unit 2, we are learning addition and subtraction facts. This week we focus on number stories, adding +0 and +1 and double facts.

Writing: We continue working on personal narratives. We are using details to describe our small moments, and we are learning how to create powerful endings.

Social Studies: We continue to learn the importance of individual action and character and how heroes from long ago and recently have made a difference in others’ lives. This week we are learning about Louis Pasteur.

Science: Have you ever wondered why a frog says “ribbit”? We will be learning how to identify different frogs by their unique sounds.
