ACADEMICS
Reading: We have started a new unit: Growing Our Word Solving Muscles. As we take control of our reading, we are learning how to make movies in our minds to help us better understand what we are reading. We are also learning how to stop and try different strategies to help decode challenging words.
Phonics: We continue reviewing Phonological Awareness. We are learning how to read and spell words ending in -ing, -y, -ey, -ie, -ch, -tch, -ic, and -ick. We are also learning how to read multisyllabic words with the schwa sound.
Spelling: New sorts were distributed today. Please check your child’s planner for their new sort. Spelling tests will be given next Monday.
Math: We are learning different addition strategies for adding 2- and 3-digit numbers. These strategies are Counting Up, Combining Groups (1s, 10s…separately), Adjusting and Compensating, and Standard Algorithm. Please help your child with their addition and subtraction math facts up to 20.
Writing: Nonfiction Writing – we are learning to write about things of which we have expertise. We are writing as much as we can about our topic, and we are learning how to set goals for our writing.
Religion: We are learning that we meet Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We are learning how to confess our sins.
Social Studies: We are learning how to use primary and secondary sources to learn about our family history.
Science: We will be learning where plants grow best.
