As you know, we have adopted the common core standards and last year we introduced a new textbook – Everyday Math – in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade. Some of us, in the upper grades find the content difficult, as it is a shift in the way math is taught. Everyday Math is concept-driven. Lessons include models, multiple representations, and academic vocabulary. The students work hard to make sense of math and apply their knowledge with real-world problems. They are given opportunities to share their thinking and reason mathematically as we work with partners and in small groups.
Please encourage your student to explain their thinking when solving math problems at home. Remember, too, that Everyday Math has an online component for both students and parents. All students know the website and their password. (6th graders have it taped to the inside of their math notebooks). Please visit the website and explore it – parent letters in both English and Spanish review lessons taught as well as, upcoming lessons. You will find Study Link pages, an interactive student reference book and games to play. Review the student reference book, play a game against your student, try to better your own time and learn to love math again!
