Dear Second Grade Families,
Thank you to all our primary center volunteers. You were terrific!
I heard this on T.V….”Parents who love to read with their kids will have kids who love to read.” Continue the great job you are doing at home with reading. Not only are you giving your child the gift of language, but the gift of yourself as well. Since many second graders are becoming great readers, they may bring appropriate chapter books from home that they are reading. Please make sure the student’s name is in the book. Extra reading is encouraged for those who complete tasks quickly or while we are waiting for our turn to use the restroom and/or get drinks, (especially for those who have completed the monthly seatwork assignments).
FLAT PEOPLE UPDATE: Postcards of our area were sent this past week. As our incoming mail continues, we have enjoyed learning about various places in California (some in So.Cal.) as well as in other parts of our country. Parents please encourage your child’s Flat Person host to continue to send mail, especially pictures and postcards. (These will be needed for the second part of this activity). We will be sending a letter at the end of this month asking flat second graders to return home.
UPCOMING FIELD TRIP: On Thursday, January 20, we will be going to the Coronado Butterfly Preserve. We will leave at 9:00 and return at 2:00. Your child need will need to bring a sack lunch and a drink. (Snack will be provided). Please make sure to put your child’s name on this brown bag. Students are to wear long blue jeans, school polo shirt/sweatshirt, and older tennis shoes. (It could be dusty and/or muddy). We were not able to go last year due to the lack of butterflies.
FREE DRESS: We will have an opportunity for appropriate free dress this week. Wednesday will be Sports day ($1.00) with the proceeds going towards our second trimester mission awareness project, Holy Childhood Association.

RELIGION: Jesus teaches us how to give love to others by being kind, respectful, honest, and truthful. Please have a conversation with your child about appropriate movies and tv programs. This is mentioned in our religion book as we study the commandments in preparation for the sacrament of Reconciliation. A copy of the Act of Contrition will be going home so your child can begin memorizing this prayer.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Reading for comprehension and fluency; homophones (sound alike, but spelled different and have different meanings) in spelling, short week, one test; dictionary work; ABC order; vocabulary development; word families; decoding; creative writing.
MATH: Addition and subtraction facts to 20; some time and money; story problems, data, graphing, and gathering information.
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: Martin Luther King, Jr., soil, Monarch butterflies, etc.
Have a good week…Mrs. Danforth
