Dear Parents, December 6, 2010
A HUGE “Thank You” to Mr. Sezzi and Mr. Galvan (a parent of a kindergartener, second and fourth grader) for helping in the first grade classroom for Primary Centers. I could not have done it without you!
It is Saint Nicholas Day today and the children have been very good. We made wooden shoes (out of paper) and left them out for Saint Nicholas. Hopefully, we will find a treat!
I hope your children came home last Tuesday and told you of the exciting time we had in the science lab! We met with our sixth grade buddies and dissected owl pellets. Inside we found many bones! We tried hard to identify the tiny bones of an animal called a vole. We were lucky to find entire skulls, pelvic bones and ribs. We had a great time, even though it was just before lunch!
Our reading strategy this week is “monitor and clarify”. Our comprehension skill that can help us with the understanding of a story is the sequencing of events. Knowing what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story and answering the who, what, where, when, and why questions about the story will help us understand what we read. Our phonics focus this week is on words with triple clusters (splash, string). We are also reviewing words with the short sound of /u/. We will not have new spelling words this week. As we continue to work on the structure of a sentence, our grammar focus this week will be on asking sentences. We are finishing our chapter on relating addition and subtraction facts in math this week and should be ready for a test soon. In religion, we continue learning why God promised us a Savior and preparing for Christmas.
Please remind your child to bring their library book to school tomorrow so that they may check out a new one.
Water bottle sales continue on Tuesday and Thursday. Thank you for your support!
Tomorrow is Teddy Bear Day! Remember to bring a new teddy bear or special friend to school tomorrow. We will gather in the Biedermann Hall and present our stuffed “friends” to Monsignor Flemming.
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are parent-teacher conferences and the children will be dismissed at 11:30.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
Mrs. Manning
