Dear Parents,                                                     April 18, 2011

The Jog-a-thon was a great success!  The first graders had fun running, dancing, and eating.  Thank you PTC for such a fun fundraiser!

Congratulations to the speech contest semi-finalists:  Sol, Kaylee, Aliyah, Ella, Naomi, Paris, and Matias.  Good Luck!

We will spend this short week in review of our spelling words and our word wall words for language arts.  However, we will work on a writer’s workshop project – a friendly letter.  We will use this activity to write a friendly letter to our 6th grade buddies, thanking them for all their help and wishing them a fun Easter vacation.

We continue working with money in math as well as, fact practice and word problems.  Please practice counting coins at home.  We have learned the penny, the nickel, and this week the dime.  Many children find it difficult to switch counting from tens to fives and/or ones.  We know how to count by tens or fives by heart but when applying it to actual coins – we loose count.  We also loose track when switching in the middle (for example, counting by tens to 20 and then switch to counting nickels.)

Our study of the Passion of Jesus is coming to an end with our reading of Benjamin’s Box.  The children really seemed to learn quite a bit and looked forward to finding something new in their box everyday.  I hope that you take some quiet time and let them show you each piece and let them retell the most beautiful story in our Catholic faith.  I pray that they realize that their box does indeed hold a “treasure”.

We continue with our study of matter in science and our study of America in social studies.

Wednesday is a free dress day.  The cost is $1.00.  All proceeds will benefit our third trimester service project.  We will also attend mass Wednesday morning and listen to the winners of the speech contest at 10:30.

Thursday is a noon dismissal day and the start of our Easter vacation.  Please remember to read, read, and read some more, do a little math practice (count coins too!) and remember that all of our spelling words remain posted to spellingcity.com.  Don’t forget to play the games!

Most of all, remember to enjoy being with each other, with family and friends.  I wish all of you a Blessed Easter and a restful vacation.

Mrs. Manning
