Dear Parents, April 22, 2013
Our reading strategy this week is evaluating. The comprehension skill that will help us with evaluating is story structure. Knowing the setting, the characters, the problem, and solution in the story and being able to sequence the events will help us evaluate the story. Our phonics focus this week is on base words and the endings –es, -ies. These endings have the /ez/ sound as in reaches and bunnies. We are also working with the prefixes un- (not) and re- (again). Our grammar focus is on the proper usage of the words was and were. We will not have a spelling unit this week!
We will be continuing with our math chapter on geometry, fractions and probability. This week we will begin symmetry and the basic fractions.
In religion we will spend our time learning that Jesus is with us in Church.
We will take our science chapter test on Monday! We will also be working on a weather skit this Tuesday titled, Alphabet Clouds.
In social studies we continue to study our country. This week we will focus on American symbols and laws.
A big “Congratulations!” to the five finalists of the speech contest! They are Alexander R., Chloe, Nico, Christopher, and Paloma! They will be visiting the judges on Tuesday and we will have our winners shortly after with a special speech assembly on Thursday.
Announcements for the week:
- An “All About Me” will be picked on Monday for this week. Stay tuned!
