Hello Third Grade Families!
I look forward meeting and chatting at Parent-Teacher Conferences this week. Please check your scheduled time. If you need to make any changes, contact the Office as soon as possible.
Since Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are all 11:30 dismissal days for conferences, our academic workload will be a bit abbreviated this week.
At last, Friday morning is our class holiday party! We will be dining on pizza and cookies before taking some time to play outside. If your child has dietary restrictions that prevent him/her from eating these foods, please pack an alternative.
This week in class…
Math: We will start with week by beginning Chapter 5: Place Value in Whole Numbers and Decimals, keeping our focus on very large numbers (up to the millions). Next week we will get small with an introduction to decimals.
IXL Homework this week:
B.3 Place value names up to the hundred-thousands
B.4 Value of a digit
B.8 Convert between standard and expanded form
Reader’s Workshop: In reading, we will be looking for structure in non-fiction texts. We will learn that readers pause along the way to summarize important information, so that they will take in and remember what they read.
Writer’s Workshop: Now that we’ve organized our informational text into chapters or “sub-topics,” this week the class will learn about different ways to structure non-fiction chapters. We will explore cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast, pro/con, part/total. We will also learn about some other elements commonly featured in information writing: quotations, lists, descriptions, labels, vocabulary words, etc. As you read this week, encourage your child to explore texts on the subject (s)he has identified being an expert in and will write about.
Science: We move from telescopes into the solar system with the sun and the planets. Some key vocabulary words will include: sun, planet, orbit, moon, inner planets and outer planets.
Religion: The class will learn all about the Epiphany, culminating with a celebration on Friday.
Have a great week!
