Hello Second Grade Families,
We are busy as ever over here, preparing for the Saints Parade, Halloween and our first Centers…oh my! If you’re interested in joining us on Friday for Primary Centers, feel free to come over. Just remember that you must be here by 10:00 in order to earn the two service hours.
This week we will tackle the following…
Math: We will finally wrap up Unit 2 with a test on Thursday. As we close out the unit, we will spend some time in small groups on our first Open Response problems. Open responses are opportunities for students to tackle especially tough, multi-step story problems as a group. They are expected to work as a team, sharing their thinking as well as listening to others all the while recording the steps used to solve.
For IXL math homework, please complete the following skills:
F.14 Balance subtraction equations
F.11 Subtraction word problems
E.19 Add three one-digit numbers: word problems
Word Work: New words went home on Monday. Our next test will be on Friday. Remember that you can always access your child’s spelling list on SpellingCity.com. Next week we will learn about cumulative “Spell Checks”. Stay tuned…
Reading: This week we took one more look at one of our mentor texts and asked the question, “What does this author want tot teach me?”. We will spend this final stretch of the unit thinking about books as a whole, noticing how it all “clicks together.”
Writing: We finally made it to publication! This week the students will begin the process of taking their best writing through our writing checklist, making improvements and revising where necessary. Once students have published one work, they will be welcome and encouraged to do the same with other favorite stories written over the course of the trimester or begin to write new ones. In essence, the writing process continues…
Science: Wednesday afternoon we are lucky enough to take part in a special in-house field trip (science presentation) on plant life! In the mean time, we continue to tend to our garden, expanding our bounty now to lima beans, zucchini, sunflowers, broccoli, radishes, sugar snap peas, carrots and more! This week we will also learn about how weather affects plants.
Religion: Cards with the content of your child’s saint presentation will go home on Thursday. Start practicing a little every day and by November 2nd you’ll be ready!
Have a great week!
Best,
Ms. Espinosa
