Hello 3rd Grade Families!

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday weekend among family and friends. There will be much happening in the following three weeks. Below are some highlights.

-The St. Vincent de Paul food drive is taking place now. Students took home bags on Monday and are encouraged to fill them up with non-perishables. All will go to feed local hungry families this holiday season.

-Teddy Bear Day is fast approaching. Remember to pick up a new teddy bear to give to a child this Christmas. All will go to the Adopt-a-Family program here in Los Angeles.

This week in class…

Math:

Unit 4 — We continue working steadily on the difference between multiplication and division applying both to number stories in order to solve problems.

IXL Math Skills Homework:

I.2 Write Division Sentences for Groups

I.4 Write Division Sentences for Arrays

Reading: Fluency and reading logs go back out this week. All students should read a minimum of 100 minutes each week and record this in their reading logs.

Word Work: Our next spelling test is scheduled for Friday. Since last week was short, some groups may recognize the same words.

Curricular Spotlight – Grammar: This week in grammar we will take a look back at a lesson from Chapter 6: Parts of a Letter. In drafting our letters to Santa, the students will learn how to properly format a letter to include the heading, greeting, body, closing and signature. In practicing for this lesson, many students found that they do not know their complete home address; so this week I would highly recommend working with your son or daughter on this. For MANY reasons, all boys and girls should know their street number, name, city, state and zip code.  (I would highly recommend practicing your phone number as well.) If you’ve mastered this, then spend some time this week working with your child in his or her signature. Like knowing your address, learning to write your name in cursive is an important life skill.

Parent Conferences: Just quick reminder that the Office maintains our school’s master conference schedule. If you’d like to change the date or time of your child’s conference, please contact Mrs. Hahn as soon as possible so that she may squeeze you in at a time that best fits your needs.

Progress Reports: Trimester 1 report cards are scheduled to go home Tuesday, December 5th. After you’ve had a chance to review, please remember to sign and return the envelope so that it may be used again next trimester.

Best,

Ms. Espinosa
