Hello Third Grade Families,

This week will be cold and a little wet, so please remember to send your kiddos to school with a school sweater and/or jacket every morning.

Math: We continue Chapter 5: Place Value in Whole Numbers and Decimals, now turning our focus toward the very small: decimals! We will assign new values to our base-10 blocks (flats = 1.0, longs = .10 & cubes = .01) and connect decimals to dollars and cents as much as possible in order to make sense of these new numbers.

IXL Math Skills Homework:

AA.1 What decimal number is illustrated?

AA.3 Word names for decimals

Reading: We will work toward growing bigger theories about characters based on patterns in behavior before digging deeper and asking, “Why might this character be this way?”. Ultimately, our goal is to use these theories about character to predict.

Word Work: This week’s words can be found in your child’s planner. Our spelling next test is scheduled for Friday.

Grammar: Students will be learning all about Past-Tense Verbs in Lesson 18. Take some time this week to compare these with present-tense verb constructions. Go online to the Grammar Workshop website in order to access more practice and study opportunities.

Writer’s Workshop: Now that we’ve organized our informational text into chapters or “sub-topics,” this week the class will learn about different ways to structure non-fiction chapters. We will explore cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast, pro/con, part/total. We will also learn about some other elements commonly featured in information writing: quotations, lists, descriptions, labels, vocabulary words, etc. As you read this week, encourage your child to explore texts on the subject (s)he has identified being an expert in and will write about.

Science: We continue to learn all about biomes.

Social Studies: We continue our unit on Chumash life.

Religion: The class will wrap up Chapter 7 with a quiz on Wednesday. Click here for a Study Guide.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
