Hello Third Grade Families,
Tuesday is our first field trip. We will be visiting the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. Students should arrive at school on time and in their uniforms with a lunch packed in their regular lunchboxes. I’m sure it will be a great day!
This week we’ll be studying the following:
Math: The class will complete Unit 3 with a test on Wednesday. We will then begin Unit 4 “Multiplication and Division” covering lesson 4.1 Multiples of Equal Groups. Since our math is becoming increasingly challenging, I highly recommend following along with us at www.everydaymathonline.com. Your child’s username and password can be found in his/her planner.
For IXL math homework, please complete the following Third Grade skills:
N.7 Add and Subtract Money Amounts
O.4 Read a Calendar
O.8 Reading Schedules
Spelling: Click here to download this week’s spelling words and pattern/principle. Go to www.spellingcity.com and use the drop-down menu to search for our class. Units 1-36 are available for practice.
Vocabulary: This week we will continue Unit 7. There will be a vocabulary test on Friday. The words, definitions and practice exercises are all available at the Vocabulary Workshop website. Your child’s username and password can be found in his/her planner.
Reading: The class will finish our second novel, Sarah, Plain and Tall, this week. After that, we will be reading books from our classroom leveled library. However, our next books will be Tea With Milk and Emma’s Rug, both my Allan Say.
Click here to download the Reading Log.
English: The class will continue Unit 2 with Lessons 12 & 13. Our next grammar unit test will take place the week after Thanksgiving on December 5th. Extra grammar review and practice exercises are available at the Grammar Workshop website. Directions can be found in your child’s planner. We will also continue with our personal narratives in Writer’s Workshop. The class is doing a great job of identifying “small moments” and “stretching them out” through the use of description, dialog and powerful verbs.
Science: We will be going on our first field trip!!! There we will learn all about digging for fossils as well as the solar system. This is an excellent preview of chapters to come both in our life and earth science units.
Social Studies: We will continue our study of California’s first people with “Tribal Traditions.” Go to www.estudiesweekly.com for access to all of our social studies reading content.
Religion: We will begin Chapter 19, an extension of our study of the saints, by learning about the Communion of Saints.
Best,
Mrs. Espinosa
