Hello Second Grade Families,
Happy Valentine’s Day! The class is eagerly looking forward to Thursdays festivities when our guests of honor will be our Valentine cards.
In class this week, we will be busy as ever! See below for an overview of our plans.
Math: This week we will continue with Unit 6: Whole-Number Operations and Number Stories. We began by adding three and four numbers, and now we are working hard on addition and subtraction word problems. These can be challenging for some students as they are not as formulaic and careful reading is required. In addition, we continue to work on subtraction with regrouping in class. Most students have a general idea on the steps, but many reminders are still needed when determining whether or not to regroup (borrow). This is a great skill to practice at home as it requires much practice before achieving mastery.
For IXL Math homework this week, please complete the following skills.
H.6 Subtract two 2-digit numbers with regrouping
L.10 Addition and subtraction word problems up to 100
L.8 Add and subtract numbers up to 100
Reading: We’ve completed our non-fiction unit and will spend the first part of the week preparing to present our research findings to an audience. We’ve added notes to our tri-folds, identified photos in our books to help support our teaching and even practiced by teaching our classmates!
Our next unit will pivot back to fiction with a focus on reading longer books. By the end of the week, we will have started our first session on reading-aloud to help our in-your-head reading voice.
Word Work: The students have this week’s words and should plan for the next spelling test on Friday. Although we are not in the lab this week, the words will still be available on SpellingCity.com.
Science and Writing: This week, we continue with our lab now with a more watchful eye on how to best to write results and conclusions. The students started the week learning that results can be presented and organized on a table, and that conclusions should not only answer those initial questions driving a lab but address anomalies found in results. In the second half of the week, we will look to mentor texts in order to improve upon our results pages before moving on to new experiments next week.
Religion: We will continue with Chapter 17: Jesus Invites Us. Mid-week, Fr. Al will be stopping by to give us a little preview of what to expect from First Reconciliation.
Have a great week!
Ms. Espinosa
