Dear Third Grade Families,

With the School Fair rapidly approaching, this week we will not have reading homework. Instead, I would like students to use this time to put the finishing touches on their solar system projects, which are due in class on Monday, March 5th. The students have told me all about how hard they have been working, and many of these projects sound quite ambitious. I look forward to seeing them next week.

This Wednesday we will attend the Stations of the Cross in the church at 2:00. All families are invited to join us for this weekly gathering during Lent.

Finally, on Friday our school will celebrate Read Across America day as well as Dr. Seuss’s birthday! Our class will be reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck followed by an oobleck making activity in the science lab. We will also join in with the whole school in an after lunch silent reading time.

In terms of academics, here’s what our week looks like:

Math: Fractional parts of a group followed by mixed numbers. We will also begin to add and subtract fractions with like denominators.

Language Arts: Begin a 2-week unit on contractions in spelling and focus on the library for vocabulary. In reading, we will continue with our theme “Mysteries of the Deep” and begin the story of the Loch Ness Monster by Ellen Rabinowich. We will be focusing on facts vs. opinions.

Science: We will finish up with why we have the seasons and move on to the phases of the moon.

Social Studies: We will focus on how to make an economic choice when consumers are faced with several options in the marketplace.

Religion: We will focus on the season of Lent and begin our class Lenten project: being good stewards of the Earth by setting aside 10 minutes a week to clean up our school’s field.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Espinosa
