Dearest Second Grade Families,

Hello sunshine! What a pleasure it has been to get a break from the rain and run out on that green grass. I hope everyone is enjoying these longer evenings outside.

In class, we continue to do our best and make the most of our time together. Below is a peek at our week:

Math: Our math studies this week are largely focused on measurement of all kinds. We’ll begin the week with measurements of standing jumps and arm spans both in centimeters and inches, before moving on to weight. The data collected will then be used in the second half of the week in order to find minimums, maximums and medians before plotting it all on tables and various graphs. As of now, our plan is to finish the Unit next week.

For IXL homework this week, please complete the following skills:

J.3 Subtract 3-digit numbers

I.3 Add 3-digit numbers

Q.16 Number of days in each month (you may want to have a calendar handy for this one!)

Word Work: We continue to work our way through each sort. As always, you can access your child’s spelling words via spellingcity.com. Our next spelling test is scheduled for Friday.

Reading: Great job getting your poems in! This week, in addition to our Reader’s Workshop curriculum, we will take some time to practice memorizing and reciting our poems. Next week, each student will be given the opportunity to recite for the class (with second, third or more chances if requested) before finalists are selected.

In Reader’s Workshop, we are learning about strategies for holding onto stories even when books are long. The students are learning how to work productively with partners too, so that both can help each other when books get tricky.

Writing: We continue with our information books, adding text features to help readers learn from our writing. The class will also learn how to use comparisons to teach. Our plan is to finish the unit next week.

Science: Our plan is to extend our study of weather and climate into the beginning of a unit erosion and earth’s surface.

Religion: We are right in the middle of first communion planning! Our banners are almost done and even parents have a special homework assignment. Check your e-mail for dates and directions.

Have a great week,

Ms. Espinosa
