Dear Parents, December 1, 2014
I hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving and wonderful weekend. This week in first grade, we are learning…
Language Arts: We are continuing theme 4 in our reading series this week. Our reading strategy this week is “evaluate”. Our comprehension skill that can help us evaluate whether we enjoyed a book is “compare/contrast”. Comparing and contrasting or finding ways in which certain things are the same or different can help us in understanding a story and ultimately in deciding if we enjoyed the story. Our phonics focus this week is on words with ‘s’ clusters, silent letters (knit, write) and reviewing the short sound of /e/. We continue to work on the structure of a sentence and our grammar focus this week will be on telling sentences.
Spelling: This week, our spelling words are from unit 15- clusters with ‘s’.
Math: We are starting with Unit 5: Place Value, Number Stories, and Basic Facts. This week we will be learning about place values tens and ones and relation symbols (greater than, less, than, equal to).
Religion: We will be reading from our religion books this week. This week we will learn that God chose Mary and Joseph.
Science: We will be wrapping up Chapter 3: How Living Things Meet Their Needs. We will take a final look at how animals use their structures (body parts) to meet their needs before we take our test.
Social Studies: We will be taking the next few weeks to read biographies of memorable people in our history and to complete a book report.
