Dear Parents, April 18, 2016
This week in first grade, we are learning…
Language Arts: Our reading strategy this week is evaluating. The comprehension skill that will help us with evaluating is story structure. Knowing the setting, the characters, the problem, and solution in the story and being able to sequence the events will help us evaluate the story. Our phonics focus this week is on base words and the endings –es, -ies. These endings have the /ez/ sound as in reaches and bunnies. We are also working with the prefixes un- (not) and re- (again). Our grammar focus is on the proper usage of the words was and were.
Spelling: Our spelling words this week, are NOT from our spelling book. They are words that will be specifically targeting our phonics of base words and ending with –es and –ies. The words will not be found on spellingcity.com.
Math: We are continuing on with our unit, where we will be spending time reviewing fractions and taking our test at the end of the week.
Religion: We will be reading from our religion books this week: Jesus is with us in His Church.
Science: In science we will be wrapping up our discussion on seasons! We will be taking our test.
Social Studies: We will be starting our new Social Studies unit, My Country, My Heroes. We will begin with vocabulary and our first two lessons about sharing the land and how our land was discovered.
