Dearest Second Grade Families,
Happy New Year! Here’s hoping that everyone had time over the holiday to rest and play a little too among friends and family. As this is a short week, much of our time will be devoted to starting new chapters and units.
Math: These three days will be used to introduce students to the traditional algorithm for addition with regrouping (“carrying”…the way you and I probably learned it). So much of this is about neatness as lining up those ones-tens-hundreds columns is where the accuracy lies. We will work with graph paper and in small groups starting first to add without regrouping and then getting progressively more challenging. This is the students’ first introduction to this so if your child has not mastered double and triple digit with regrouping in three days, know that we will revisit it throughout the year over and over and over again.
Since this is such a short week, there will be no homework. Instead, homework folders and work packets will go home on Tuesday.
Word Work: The students will get their new sorts this week, but there will not be a spelling test until next Friday.
Reading: We will continue to study non-fiction texts, starting out week with using text features to notice and understand key words. Then, we will learn how to use context help us understand the meaning of known words. In addition, sight words testing will begin again on Monday. Remember to study those words and phrases!
Science & Writer’s Workshop:We will wrap up our study of forces and motion upon our return on Wednesday so that we may begin our non-fiction writing unit (“Lab Reports and Science Books”) straight away.
Religion: The students will continue our preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation with chapter 12: We Meet Jesus in the Sacrament.
Have a great week!
