Dear Third Grade Families,
I can’t believe we’re already beginning our first full week of school! This week we will begin with our first homework assignments, slowly building each week until we reach full speed.
We will start with Spelling Unit #1. Every week I will attach a list of spelling words right here along with the spelling principle being taught in the classroom. Students are to study throughout the week in preparation for a test Friday mornings. For additional practice, spelling words from every unit can also be found at www.spellingcity.com. Just search by school and follow the links to our class.
Click here to download this week’s spelling words.
We will also begin using our Vocabulary Workshop books this week. Starting with #1, each Unit will be taught over the course of two weeks. Upcoming tests will be noted in your child’s planner with plenty of time to review and study at home; but know that there is a vocabulary quiz every other week. On a label affixed to the inside cover of your child’s planner, you will also find your child’s username and password for online practice. I highly recommend taking advantage of this resource, as it is an excellent way to reinforce words learned in class.
Finally, the students will begin Writer’s Workshop by personalizing their notebooks. Directions for this very simple project will be e-mailed to you as well as sent home with your child on Monday, so keep an eye on your inbox and in the backpacks.
In addition to language arts, we will begin Math Unit 1. Everyday Math, our textbook series, has an online component as well. Like Vocabulary Workshop, your child’s username and password will be marked in his/her planner later this week. This information will allow your child to use www.everydaymathonline.com. The site provides an interactive reference book, activities for each lesson covered in class, games, practice and vocabulary terms. I also recommend taking advantage of this resource.
The students will begin music and P.E. classes this week. From now on, please send your child to school wearing his/her P.E. uniform on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In third grade, students are also welcome to bring water bottles to class. I only ask that you bring reusable water bottles in order to reduce waste.
I look forward to meeting you Wednesday evening at 6:30 for Back-to-School night!
Best,
Mrs. Espinosa
