Hello 3rd Grade Families!

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and was even able to rest up and have a little fun, too. I’m already looking forward to meeting many happy grandparents on Friday. All guests should plan to meet us in the church for 8:30 mass.

With all the excitement of trying out the new STAR testing system last week, it seems we have a little catching up to do. So this week, we return to our regular academic schedule at full speed ahead.

Math: We will finish Unit 1 through lessons 1.12. The Unit 1 Test will take place Tuesday, September 15th. Since our next unit is all about adding and subtracting whole numbers, I ask you to take some time this week to review adding and subtracting with regrouping. Below is a link to a video using the “trade-first” method for subtracting. It should look familiar to any of us who grew up “borrowing”. (Hint: It’s the same thing with a different name.)

IXL homework:

C.3 Add two numbers up to 3 digits — word problems

D.1 Subtract numbers up to 3 digits

D.3 Subtract numbers up to 3 digits — word problems

Reading: Bravo to all those who read over the 100 minute mark this past week! Just like any other endeavor, the more practice a person has reading the better a reader that person becomes.  Again, our goal is to read 100 minutes a week and log that in using ReadingGlue.com. In class, we continue working in small reading groups practicing specific skills meant to build reading comprehension.

Spelling: New words go home Thursday, but before that Wednesday is our very first spelling test. Remember to take advantage of SpellingCity.com for additional practice and access to spelling words. Your child’s specific sort can be found on a label in his/her planner (flip to last week).

Vocabulary: We will finish Unit 1 and take an in-class quiz together as it is our first one. You can view the words and practice too at the Vocabulary Workshop website. See the inside cover of your child’s planner for details.

Grammar: So far we have learned all about quotation marks (Lesson 47) and book titles (Lesson 44). This week we cover capitalizing proper nouns (Lesson 42). For additional practice and resources, try out the Grammar Workshop website. Setting this up takes a bit more work but is well worth it! See the inside cover of your child’s planner for instructions.

Science: We will finish our work on solar energy this week before moving on to other energy sources.

Social Studies: The class will finish our study of the contents and large land masses before we begin learning all about landforms.

Religion: We continue with Chapter 2 anticipating our first religion quiz on September 15th. Click here for a Study Guide.

Have a great week.

Best,

Ms. Espinosa
