Dear Third Grade Families,
I am pleased to report that as of last Thursday, we are all done with ITBS and CogAT testing for the 2011-2012 academic year! The next time your child completes these assessments he/she will be a fourth grader. All of our students deserve a big pat on the back for their effort and endurance. At this point, Mrs. Dwyer will mail off all the answer sheets and we will wait for the results to arrive. You can expect to see these results at parent conferences in December, when we will review your child’s individual scores together.
In more news, Mrs. Keegan and I have noticed many students are not “showing their work” in Accelerated Math. Please do not erase student work. Student writing on either the printed worksheets or on attached pages help us to see how your child arrived at each answer.
On Tuesday, in addition to your child’s Trimester 1 Progress Report, you will be receiving a Sacred Heart School ID card. If your child does not receive one, keep in mind that picture make-ups are scheduled for Wednesday, October 19th. Students whose pictures were not taken will have an opportunity then.
Beginning this Thursday, SHS will be collecting new hats to be donated to children with cancer. Hats should be small enough to fit a child and need to have the tags attached. Only new hats will be accepted as they are going to children with compromised immune systems. This is a very worthy cause and I strongly encourage all to participate. As an incentive, all third graders who donate a hat will be able to wear a hat of their own to school on Thursday, October 20th, the day of our Hats Off for Cancer school assembly.
Thursday is library day. Please remind your child to bring any books that have been checking out in order to renew them or check out new ones.
Friday afternoon is pumpkin pick-up day for students who preordered one or more.
With testing complete, we will return to our regular academic schedule:
Language Arts: Review of spelling and vocabulary units 1-5, begin unit on pronouns, continued small group reading practice.
Math: Subtraction. Please review subtraction with regrouping and regrouping across zeroes with your child. This is where students often have the most difficulty.
Science: Thermal energy and evaporation .
Social Studies: Communities — Why we have rules and laws.
Religion: Chapter 3 quiz on Tuesday with a focus on St. Clare and St. Francis followed by beginning chapter 4 “God Called Mary” and a chapter on the Rosary.
Have a great week!
-Mrs. Espinosa
