Welcome back to school, fourth grade families! It is our first full week of school, which means student lunches. All lunches should be brought in lunch “boxes”; no paper bags, please. We will be having P.E. on Tuesday and Thursday, and we will have Music class on Monday and Wednesday. We are also doing STAR testing this week, on both Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
I hope all parents can come to our Back to School night this Wednesday at 6:30; I will go over procedures and expectations, along with an overview of the coming year. This event is for parents and guardians only.
THE WEEK AHEAD:
HOMEWORK (due next Monday): Students should complete ixL Math skills W 1 and W 4, as well as ELA skill A 1. TI am sending home the first Reading Fluency assignment. I would like students to answer the questions on the back and to write a short summary of the article.
THE WEEK AHEAD
Religion: We begin Unit One, focusing upon our relationship with Jesus, who is the Way to the Father. Today I sent home two family information pages from the religion book.
Math: Our first unit focuses upon geometric constructions. We are making an illustrated geometry booklet of key terms.
Reading: Students received their reading logs last week; they will keep track of time spent reading in class as well as at home. I would like them to read 20-30 minutes at home every day. During our first unit of Reader’s Workshop we will be reading realistic fiction only (nonfiction will come later). We have a large library of leveled books here in the classroom, but students may also bring books from home, and I will determine the reading level for those books, if possible. Please initial the reading log for any reading that was done at home. Click here for a copy of the reading log. READING LOG
Spelling: We started Unit One today; the test on these twenty words will be on Friday. We will work on the text pages during ELA class time.
Vocabulary: We started Unit One today. This is a two-week process, so the test will be at the end of next week.
Grammar: Our focus in Unit One is sentences: types of, subjects and predicates, run-ons and fragments.
Social Studies: Using the first two issues of Studies Weekly, we will be working on map skills, learning where the seven continents are located, and we will also be learning about hemispheres and the lines of latitude and longitude.
Science: Our first chapter focuses on ecosystems.
Thanking you for your support,
Mrs. Mary Dwyer
