Dear Parents,                     October 19, 2015

This week in first grade, we are learning…

Language Arts: This week, we begin Theme 3! Our reading strategy is “evaluate”. After reading a story, we think back on what we read and learned to decide if we like or dislike the story and why. The comprehension skill that will help us with this reading strategy is defining topic, main idea, and details within our stories. Once we can define these, we can use them to help us evaluate the story. Our phonics focus this week is double final consonants (pull, stuff, mass etc.), review of the short sound of /a/ and plurals with –s. Our grammar focus continues to be what makes a sentence a sentence.

Spelling: Our spelling words are from unit 16 – double final consonants. The words are on Spellingcity.com. Our test will be on Thursday!

Math: We are continuing with Unit 3: Visual Patterns, Number Patterns, and Counting. This week we will learn something totally new (probably for you, too) so please read the family letter with the math homework on Monday! We will be discussing the Frames-and Arrows Routine, as well as counting on a number line, and practice using a calculator. As a reminder, Everyday Math (our math series) is organized like a spiral. Just because something is introduced, does not mean mastery is expected right away. We will come back to all of the concepts we have introduced over and over again! This is one of the reasons why I LOVE Everyday Math!

Religion: We will be reading from our religion book. Our lesson is titled: Jesus Teaches Us to Pray the Our Father. In addition, a Saint worksheet went home on Friday with your child’s saint. Directions will be coming home Monday. All will have the week to complete their saint report with a due date of October 26.

Science: In science we will continue our study of animals by taking a close look at nocturnal animals.

Social Studies: We will continue with Unit 2: At Home With My Family. This week we discuss how to read a timeline. A special assignment will be coming home on Monday! This assignment is to have your child make a timeline of their lives. Please work with your child to think of one big moment that happened each year within their lives so far, beginning with their birth. They may draw a picture or use words to express what happened each year. The worksheet is to be returned this Wednesday!
