Dear Parents,                     October 26, 2015

This week in first grade, we are learning…

Language Arts: This week, our reading strategy is “predict/infer”. Before reading a story, we look at the cover, the title and the pictures and make educated guesses (or predictions) on what the story will be about. While reading, we use information learned to conclude (or infer) if our prediction is correct or what will happen next. The comprehension skill that will help us with this reading strategy is predicting. Our phonics focus this week is a review of the short sound of /i/ and verb endings –s, -ed, and –ing. We will also focus on possessive -’s. Our grammar focus continues to be what makes a sentence a sentence.

Spelling: Our spelling words are from unit 10 – a short vowel review. The words are on Spellingcity.com. Our test will be on Thursday!

Math: We are wrapping up Unit 3: Visual Patterns, Number Patterns, and Counting. This week we will be exploring dimes, exchanging money, and data!

Religion: We will be reading from our family life series. This week, we will discuss how we are a child of God. In addition, please return the completed Saint worksheet on Monday!

Science: In science we will continue our study of animals through our discussion of night-time creatures or nocturnal animals!

Social Studies: We will continue with Unit 2: At Home With My Family. This week we discuss making choices!
