Dear Parents,                     May 16, 2016

This week in first grade, we are learning…

Language Arts: We are wrapping up Theme 10 with week 3!   Our reading strategy this week is monitor/clarify. Part of becoming a good reader is realizing that if the story we are reading is unclear we must stop and clarify the story so that we understand. As you read with your student please practice this strategy. The comprehension skill that will help us with this is cause and effect. Remember the cause is why something happened and the effect is what happened. Our phonics focus this week is on adding –er and –est to base words. Examples include hot, hotter, hottest, cold, colder, and coldest. Our grammar focus is on comparing.

Spelling: We will not have a new spelling unit this week.

Math: We will be wrapping up Unit 9. This week, we will take our test and do some review games.

Religion: We will be reading from our Family Life Series this week. We will discuss how our love grows and how we take care of others.

Science: In science we will be talking about gases.

Social Studies: We are just about to wrap up our Unit 5: My Country, My Heroes. We will be discussing monuments and then taking our test by the end of the week.
