Dear Second Grade Families,

The FIELD TRIP to Goleta to learn about the Monarch butterfly was great. The weather was pleasant and the docents were very informative. There will be more study of these amazing insects at a later time, but we had to go now as the butterflies are here now. This is a good place for a family outing. The hike is easy, docents are there on weekends and the butterflies are abundant. They think they will be there until February 14. An added attraction for us was the rocket launch from Vandenburg Air Force Base.
MEDIA ALERT: Please be attentive to the movies, television shows, and video games your children choose. While they may be entertaining, the material may not be suitable for young children. This comes out in their play and creative writing.
FLAT PERSON UPDATE… It is almost time for Flat Second Graders to return home.  We will be writing and sending letters to our hosts thanking them for their hospitality and their time and energy spent helping your second grader with his/her project. Flat second graders have been traveling with host families learning about our country, rooting at soccer and football games, trick or treating, cooking a Thanksgiving turkey, decorating a Christmas tree and wrapping presents, helping on a farm, working on a computer, and many more activities. They have ‘played’ with relatives and friends, as well as family pets.  Look for their many adventures at the School Fair in March. (Assignment for this project will be forth coming).
******STUDENT OF THE WEEK…Miles******
HERE’S A QUICK LOOK AT OUR WEEK….
RELIGION: Jesus calls us to live in love and to follow His example. Begin with memorization of the Act of Contrition.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Reading for comprehension and fluency; spelling activities for the review unit; decoding; vocabulary development; ABC order; creative writing, etc.
MATH: Adding and subtracting facts to 20; DMP; Bar graphs; Time Bingo; beginning double digit addition with and without regrouping. Keep telling time and counting money.
SOCIAL STUDIES/ SCIENCE: Soil; learning from the past. Harvest of the Month will be this week.  We will be learning about good nutrition and a featured fruit or vegetable. Continue sending fresh fruit/vegetable snack with your child instead of chips, doughnuts, sweets, etc. These are empty calories. Also help your child start the day with a nutritious breakfast.
HOMEWORK for this week will be to finish January Calendar Activities, January Book-It, and the Spelling Activities; all due on Monday, January 31. This was not planned but sometime this is how the subject assignments work out. Coming also will be the 100th day of school project.
Have a good week. Next week will be Catholic Schools Week. Stay tuned for all the events…Mrs. Danforth
