Dear Parents,                                                     February 28, 2011

Thank you to those parents who were able to help with Primary Centers!  We had fun playing inside for recess too due to the rain– thank you parents!!!

We are starting theme 7 in language arts – We Can Work It Out!  Our reading strategy is summarizing and our comprehension skill that helps us with this is problem solving.  In order to summarize a story, it is helpful to recognize the problem and the solution in the story.  Paying attention to the characters, the setting, the problem the characters experience and the way they solve the problem will help you summarize. Practice this skill in reading with your child.  After reading a story have your child identify the character(s), the setting, and the problem.  Discuss how the characters solved the problem.  Also enrich your discussion by coming up with additional solutions and discuss which solution is best.  Our phonics focus this week is the long sound of /o/ spelled with the vowel pairs oa (boat) and ow (snow).  Our spelling words this week are from unit 32.  Please remember to go online to Spellingcity.com and continue to practice the posted words – play the games and take the test.  Our grammar focus this week is on Proper Nouns for people and places.

In math this week, we will continue to compare numbers using the < (less than), > (greater than) and = (equal to) symbols.  We will continue with number patterns and recognizing the ones and tens in numbers.  Hopefully we will be ready for a chapter test on Wednesday.  First graders will be participating in World Math Day tomorrow!  On March 1, children all over the world will go online and complete math problems (according to age).  Thank you to Mrs. Dwyer (our middle school math teacher) for registering us and encouraging us to participate.  In religion, we are learning that Jesus teaches us to love others. Our school fair is Wednesday and we are putting the final touches on our social studies community project.  Hope to see you all Wednesday night!  We will continue with our study of community by learning how communities change and how we trade goods and services.

The Leadership Committee is selling donuts for our service project this trimester. All proceeds will benefit The Holy Childhood Association. The donuts will be on pre-sale this week for delivery on March 8th.  The cost is $1.00.  Please try and support this worthy cause.

Friday is a full day, however the children will participate in school families and a Read Across America activity in the afternoon.

Have a wonderful week.  If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Mrs. Manning
