FIRST GRADE NEWSLETTER

NOTE FROM MRS. VAZQUEZ:

We are having a great time in first grade.  I believe their favorite subject right now is SCIENCE!  Our goal this week is to fill our sparkler bucket.  The surprise for this bucket will be “share day.”

HOMEWORK

Homework is always due on Tuesday.

  • Reading Log 15+ min. daily (Students must write their own name, write tally marks, & write minutes)
  • NO Math IXL.com
  • Two math worksheets to complete
  • Language IXL.com Skill   E.3 (100%)
  • SIGHT WORDS :  I will begin retesting sight word recognition beginning next week. Please practice at home using index cards or whiteboards.
  • Study for Spelling Test on Friday.  Your child should have their new spelling sort in their homework folder. If not, I will remind them tomorrow to pick one up.
  • FLUENCY homework!  Reminder:   This will be part of your child’s homework.  Please do NOT do the fluency all in one day.  It is meant for daily practice.

A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

Language Arts:

Our skill this week is “Drop that Bad Habit and Pick up a Good Habit!”  Have your child tell you the good habits.

*Check the Picture

*look at all the parts of the word

*Check it!

Some bad habits are:

*The Freeze (no skills used to figure out the word)

*The Tell Me!  (Asking parent/teacher for word)

*The Mumble (not sure of the word)

*The Blooper (guessing without looking at the first sound or taking the word apart)

In writing, students continue writing about their small moments.  We are focusing on adding details through pictures labels or adding the who, what, and when to our writing.

Math: We are working on telling time to the hour, counting by 2’s to 30, and sums of 5 and 10.

Religion: We will be learning our new prayer, Grace After Meals.  We continue to focus on God as our Father.

COMPLIMENT CIRCLE:  Many of you may know by now,  every Friday our students gather in a circle and compliment each other.  Each students is complimented.  We are learning to be grateful for our kind actions.  This is the BEST part of our Friday!

Science:  This week we are learning about what animals use to get eat their food.  Ask them what they learned today about birds and beaks.  We continue our lesson on Thursday. 🙂

Social Studies:  We learn about school rules, what is a map key, and how do we help in school.

P.E.:  Today the kids were learning to do jumping jacks.  Have them show off their new skills.  Please practice at home. 🙂 It was fun to watch.
