December 6, 2010

Dear Families,

This is a very busy week for our fifth grade class.  Tuesday is Teddy Bear Day.  Please bring a new stuffed animal to support Adopt-A-Family.  Also, on Tuesday report cards are being sent home.  Please sign and return the envelope to school.

Parent conferences are this week.  School is dismissed at 11:30 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The fifth grade class has started a book club.  Please ask your child about this.  As a whole class we are really enjoying our book club.  Its fantastic to see the students get so excited about reading.

Please make sure to check your student╒s planner every night.  The students should be reviewing their notes for science and social studies every night. I have explained to the students that reviewing every night is much easier than trying to “cram” the night before a test.  Also, the class knows a week in advance of the next test and they also write it in their planner.

Below is an overview of our week.

Religion:  Our focus will be on the second week of Advent. Wednesday there will be an all school mass is observance of the Immaculate Conception. We will also be having our all school mass on Friday.  Both masses begin at 8:30.  Please feel free to join us.

Math: We will continue with chapter 4, which is all about division. On Monday we will have a very special guest speaker.  Dr. Hall, a math professor from Oxnard College will be joining us.  Please ask your students about this.  He will be teaching us all about factorials!

Science:  We will begin chapter 4, which is all about water resources. Our first lesson will focus on where is the earth’s water.

Social Studies:  We will continue our study of the European Explorers.

English: We will continue with unit 9, which is on Mechanics.

Voc:  Unit 5 is our focus this week.

Spelling:  This week our spelling words are from unit 14.

Reading:  We will continue with our novel The Indian in the Cupboard.

Literature: We are starting the story “The Scribe”.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Ms. Carney
