FIRST GRADE NEWSLETTER

NOTE FROM MRS. VAZQUEZ:

We had lots of changes happen in the classroom.  I’m sure  your child went home to talk about their desks being moved and a new location for our rug. The weather also brought some changes to our lips.    Please send chap stick and extra water this week due to the dry and windy weather.  We continue working on  filling  our sparkler bucket.  The surprise for this bucket will be “share day.”  We are working hard as a class to fill that bucket.

If your child does not pass a spelling test, I will review the sort with them an extra week or come back to that sort at a later time.

A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

Language Arts:

You child is identifying the skill they are working on before reading a book.  We continue this week with “Drop that Bad Habit and Pick up a Good Habit!”  Have your child tell you the good habits.

*Check the Picture

*look at all the parts of the word

*Check it!

Some bad habits are:

*The Freeze (no skills used to figure out the word)

*The Tell Me!  (Asking parent/teacher for word)

*The Mumble (not sure of the word)

*The Blooper (guessing without looking at the first sound or taking the word apart)

In writing, students continue writing about their small moments.  We are focusing on adding details through pictures labels or adding the who, what, and when to our writing.  We are looking for punctuation marks in our writing.  Did you forget a period, question mark, or exclamation mark?

Math: We are working on  learning the worth of a nickel and penny.  Also, exchanging nickels for pennies and pennies for nickels. Keep counting by 2’s, 10’s, and 5’s at home.

Religion: We continue learning our new prayer, Grace After Meals.  Our focus will be when can we pray.  Our compliment circle will take place on Thursday instead of Friday this week. 🙂

Science:  Why are polar bears white?  By the end of this week your child should be able to answer this question.

Social Studies:  We are learning about tools and holidays long ago.
