Dear Third Grade Families,

There are only 3 weeks of school remaining and we plan to make the most of our time in order to prepare for the challenges and demands of fourth grade.

This week we plan to study the following:

Math: Now that we have completed our unit on geometry, I plan to move on to Chapter 12 where we will study multi-digit multiplication and division. Students will be taking home their area/perimeter quizzes in their Tuesday work folders. As a reminder, quizzes can be corrected and returned for full credit. Geometry tests will go home, too. Test scores stand as they are.

Language Arts:

Spelling Unit 33 focuses on the _ough & _augh patterns again. In vocabulary, we will review words that are related to making a speech. As a reminder, students may use Spelling City to study online. As we have seen in the computer lab, all spelling units are available there.

Reading— This week we will begin reading The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs. While many students may say that they have read this in the past, few have studied it in light of the Common Core standards. More specifically, we will be learning about: character traits and motivations; central messages & lessons and how they are conveyed through key details in a text; distinguishing the reader’s point of view from that of a character or author of a text; and comparing and contrasting the most important points and key details presented in two texts on the same topic. This will be our final text for the year and we will be studying it for the next two weeks.

Please make sure your child brings in a copy by Tuesday. While many students already have their copy here at school, others have said that it is at home.

Language—At this point in writer’s workshop, many students are at different stages in the writing process.  While some are publishing, others need to spend more time revising and editing according to the mini-lessons presented in class.

Religion: This week we will finish chapter 18 with a quiz on Wednesday.

Social Studies: We will finish our unit on the Chumash people with a visit from volunteer docents from the Museum of Ventura County. They will be teaching us all about Chumash food and cooking. Yum!

Science: Our class will begin Chapter 2, “When Environments Change.”

Have a great week!

All the Best,

Mrs. Espinosa
