Hello 4th Grade Families! Lots going on in this short month! Here’s a look at our week:

Important Dates:

  • Tuesday, February 14: Valentine’s Day — FREE free dress + students can bring in valentines for our exchange at the end of the day
  • Wednesday, February 15: Presto Pasta Fundraiser in Ventura
  • Friday, February 17: 12pm Dismissal, Free Dress (Donation for Earthquake Relief)

Homework:

  • IXL Math: (Remember, the goal is NOT 100 — please encourage students to attempt the skills and to do their best)
    • E.10: Divide 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers: quotients up to 10
    • E.16: Divide using partial quotients
  • 20-30 minutes of reading, 5 times a week – 5 Reading Responses (Tuesday-Tuesday)
    • This week for their journal responses, students can read nonfiction or fiction books. Please have them use the menus as their guide. A lot of the responses work for either genre but some are specific.

In Class This Week:

  • Math: Students continue to practice division with the partial quotients method. We are taking it a step further and using word problems to practice dividing with real-world situations.
  • Writing: Students are wrapping up their personal essays. Our goal this week is to finish all 5 of our paragraphs this week. Today we focused on our introductions with engaging hooks to grab our reader’s interest.
  • Reading: Students are presenting their findings from their weather research. As this ends, we focus more on our novel study of The Island of the Blue Dolphins.
  • Social Studies: We are continuing to read and learn about the start of the mission era and Fr. Junipero Serra. Starting this week, students will research one of the California missions. We will use our kindles and also head to the computer lab more often to complete this work.
  • Science: Last week, students began their study of sound by creating paper cup telephones. Students experimented by replacing the items we used with others to test out how the sound changed. This week, we use that knowledge to grow our idea of what sound is.
  • Religion: This week, our chapter’s focus is “We Love God.” We will discuss how we can live out the 1st commandment: “You shall have no other gods before me.” Also, because of Valentine’s Day, we will learn a bit about who St. Valentine was.

Let’s have a great week!
