Hello 4th Grade Families! I hope everyone had a pleasant President’s Day. Here’s a look at our week:

Important Dates:

  • Wednesday, February 22: Ash Wednesday – Mass in the morning
  • Friday, February 24: 2pm Dismissal & Free Dress (Donation for Earthquake Relief)

Homework:

  • IXL Math: (Remember, the goal is NOT 100 — please encourage students to attempt the skills and to do their best)
    • N.6: Elapsed time
    • E.20: Divide larger numbers by 1-digit numbers: interpret remainders
  • 20-30 minutes of reading, 5 times a week – 5 Reading Responses (Tuesday-Tuesday)
    • This week for their journal responses, students can read nonfiction or fiction books. Please have them use the menus as their guide. A lot of the responses work for either genre but some are specific.

Our Week:

  • Math: This week, we give our brains a rest from division and focus toward angles! We are using protractors in class to measure angles. With this, we learn of rotations and elapsed time. Lots of connections in our math work this week!
  • Writing: Students are working hard toward finishing their personal essays and are eager to write a new opinion piece! I am pleased with their work so far and am proud of their efforts. Many students have shared how daunting “writing essays” sounded at first, but how confident they feel now!
  • Reading: We are focusing on our novel study, The Island of the Blue Dolphins, and the way that our main character, Karana is reacting to what’s happening around her. Our vocabulary is growing wider each day as we breakdown the meanings of unfamiliar words in our text, as well as when we discover their synonyms.
  • Social Studies: This week, we launch our Mission Research projects. Today, students got online in the computer lab and started to research about the establishment of their missions. Many were eager to continue on and some even suggested finding books to bring into class during research time! (That is completely welcome! If your student would like to bring in research materials of their own, they can. We will be using our kindles and the computers to complete our research. With that being said, please remind students to bring their kindles CHARGED and ready each day!)
  • Science: Sound! We continue our study of sound and what it is this week. Our focus question for our lab is: What would happen if you screamed in outer space?
  • Religion: This week we start our Lenten journey. Ash Wednesday will be celebrated as a school. Our religion lessons will be focused toward Lent as we continue through this season.

Let’s have a great week!

Ms. Schmaeling
