Dear 4th Grade Families,

Today was our 100th day of school! Our class agrees that we are 100 days smarter! We hope the next chunk of time we have together continues to be great.

Here’s an update of what we are currently learning in class! Also, don’t forget to check the end of this post for the latest episode of our podcast!

  • Wednesday, February 7: Field Trip
  • Friday, February 9: 2pm Dismissal
  • Friday, February 9: Glow Dance – 4:30pm – Parent Group
  • Wednesday, February 14: Ash Wednesday (School Mass at 8:30am) and Valentine’s Day
  • Math: Our class sharpens their multiplication skills and practices writing and reading BIG numbers all the way into the billions! Students will be reviewing this week and taking their next test next week.
  • Reading: As a class, we keep reading Island of the Blue Dolphins and reflect on how Karana is feeling being alone on the island. Students are also active in their reading groups. We are practicing reading comprehension and using complete sentences to answer questions.
  • Writing: Opinion — This week, we continue to focus on organizing our writing into paragraphs. We also practice writing different topic and conclusion sentences to make our writing flow better.
  • Grammar: Similes and Metaphors
  • Religion: God’s mercy – We also connect religion to our study topics in Social Studies with the Mission era.
  • Science: The Birth of Rocks — This week, we wrap up our ideas for surviving landslides and start to review for our test.
  • Social Studies: Students have each been assigned a CA mission. We are starting to research these missions using books and websites. Students will be collecting information for their projects which will be for presentation during our Spring Showcase next month. Our field trip this week will also help us in building our knowledge around this era.
  • Reading Homework: 5 reading responses
    • Students are encouraged to read 20-30 minutes each night. After reading, students will select a question/task from their reading menu to answer in their journal. 4 responses are to be completed by next Tuesday. Students may read either fiction or non-fiction and choose a corresponding task.
  • Math Homework:
    • 5-10 Study Link
    • 2-3 Study Link (Review of Place Value)

Let’s have a great week,

Ms. Schmaeling
