Dear 4th Grade Families,
Here’s an update of what we are currently learning in class! Also, don’t forget to check the end of this post for the latest episode of our podcast!
Important Dates and Reminders:
- Friday, January 26: 2pm Dismissal
- Last week of January: Catholic Schools Week & Warm Wear and Food Drive
- February 7: Field Trip!
Our Learning:
- Math: Partial-Products Multiplication method – For example: 395 x 4 can be solved by doing 300 x 4 = 1,200 and 90 x 4 = 360 and 5 x 4 = 20 so 1,200 + 360 + 20 = 1,580. 395 x 4 = 1,580.
- Reading: In reading groups, students work on summarizing and locating facts within the text they are reading. We also continue our class novel study, Island of the Blue Dolphins.
- Writing: Opinion — Students are working on using the opposing opinion in their reasons. For example if their opinion is “Cats are better than dogs,” students may write, “Some might argue that dogs are more playful than cats. However, cats are calm and more independent than dogs.”
- Grammar: Synonyms and Antonyms
- Religion: God’s Mercy and our Conscience
- Science: The Birth of Rocks — How could you survive a landslide?
- Social Studies: While reading The Island of the Blue Dolphins, we make connections to the real life situations of CA natives interacting with CA explorers.
Homework: Due Tuesday, January 30
- Reading Homework: 5 reading responses
- Students are encouraged to read 20-30 minutes each night. After reading, students will select a question/task from their reading menu to answer in their journal. 5 responses are to be completed by next Tuesday. Students may read either fiction or non-fiction and choose a corresponding task.
