Dear 4th Grade Families,

I hope you are doing well! Please look out for an email coming your way soon about Beginning of the Year Conferences. My goal is to start these the week of 10/23 (next week).

Here’s an update of what we are currently learning in class! Also, don’t forget to check the end of this post for the latest episode of our podcast!

Important Dates:

  • Tuesday and Thursday: PE! Please have students wear appropriate shoes and their PE uniforms.
  • Tuesdays: Library Day! Our class will visit the library every Tuesday afternoon to “check out” and read books. We went last week and it was a success! Students are able to take 2 books/week and can return and re-check out new books each week.
  • Friday, October 20: 12pm Dismissal

Looking ahead:

  • Monday, October 23: Halloween Tattoo Presale Begins
  • Friday, October 27: Free Dress (with donation for Adopt-a-Family) and 2pm Dismissal

Our Learning:

  • Math: This week we took a Math test about addition and subtraction strategies as well as data calculations (mode, median, maximum). We will continue to build these skills as we move into multiplication and division.
  • Reading: We continue with our Reading Groups and individual skill building. Some of our groups focus on making predictions and the Stop, Think, Write reading strategy. As a class, we continue with The Tiger Rising and making connections to the text.
  • Writing: Personal Narratives – Paragraphs and Editing! We are nearing the end of our writing process for our first “masterpieces” of the year. Soon, we’ll begin publishing our works.
  • Grammar: Adverbs!
  • Religion: The Parts of the Mass — This week, we continue to focus on the Liturgy of the Eucharist and its many parts. This Friday at 8:30am, we’ll be going to Mass. Please join us if your schedule allows.
  • Science: The Human Brain – How does your brain control your body? // We wrap up the learning of this unit and will be taking our 1st Science test soon.
  • Social Studies: Pre-Columbian Settlements and People: What was life like for native Californians before other settlers arrived?

Homework: DUE OCTOBER 24

  • Reading Response Journal: around 20-30 minutes of reading, 5 times a week – 5 Reading Responses (Tuesday-Tuesday)
    • This week for their journal responses, students will read fiction books. Please have them use the menus as their guide. As students complete reading responses, have them color or cross out the activity chose.
  • IXL: (Students do not need to reach 100%. Please encourage your students to do their best, but 100% is not required)
    • 4th Grade Math C.3: Round a number to any place: up to hundred thousands
    • 4th Grade Math E.3: Subtract two multi-digit numbers

Let’s have a great week,

Ms. Schmaeling
